Queer representation matters. Being seen and represented authentically (and not as simply a token queer character) helps straight/cisgender people see that queer people are nothing to be afraid of. That we are as normal as anyone else.
My favorite queer character in literature is Lisbeth Salander from Stieg Larsson's Millennium series (e.g. The Girl With The Dragon Tatttoo).
Lisbeth is a complex character on multiple levels. She is pansexual, strong, independent (sometimes to a fault), and defiant of social norms. She lives by her own rules and doesn't feel the need to explain herself to anyone. And she cares about people who've been victimized, especially women.
Who is your favorite queer character in literature? What about them appeals to you? In what ways did they change how you see yourself or the queer community, or even the world?

My favorite queer character is actually a couple: Angel and Louis, from John Connolly’s long-running Charlie Parker series. They are aging (like me), devoted, righteous assassins who only kill for good. I read every book they’re in and I love watching them deal with their own aging and mortality even as they continue to take out the bad apples without batting an eye. As for a book: Chaser would be nice.

Because of my love for Giovanni’s Room, I’ll have to go with David, though he isn’t the easist character to embrace. If I go with mysteries, it’s difficult, but I’ll go with Donald Strachey from the series written by Richard Stevenson.
Taken Raven’s advice and read Russell Quaint. Anthony Bidulka is awesome!
Great suggestions! I love these. My TBR list is growing.
