Who's Your Favorite Queer Literary Character?

Queer representation matters. Being seen and represented authentically (and not as simply a token queer character) helps straight/cisgender people see that queer people are nothing to be afraid of. That we are as normal as anyone else.

My favorite queer character in literature is Lisbeth Salander from Stieg Larsson's Millennium series (e.g. The Girl With The Dragon Tatttoo).

Lisbeth is a complex character on multiple levels. She is pansexual, strong, independent (sometimes to a fault), and defiant of social norms. She lives by her own rules and doesn't feel the need to explain herself to anyone. And she cares about people who've been victimized, especially women.

Who is your favorite queer character in literature? What about them appeals to you? In what ways did they change how you see yourself or the queer community, or even the world?

My favourite character is Todd Chavez from Bojack Horseman. He is the first assexual representation I’ve seen on tv and he is a nice person who shows how hard it is for us in a world where people value sex. Some are somehow offended when a person is neutral to it or doesn’t want it.

I really like Russell Quant, Anthony Bidulka’s private eye.
